Patient-Friendly Explanation

A sleep study records your breathing, oxygen levels and brain activity while you sleep. It shows whether you stop breathing repeatedly at night, which can cause daytime tiredness, high blood pressure and weight gain.

Clinical Definition

Polysomnography is the reference standard for diagnosing sleep-disordered breathing, recording airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, EEG, electrooculography, chin and limb EMG and body position. The apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) grades severity from mild (5 to 15 events per hour) through moderate (15 to 30) to severe (above 30). Home sleep apnoea testing is adequate for uncomplicated high-risk patients. Untreated obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with hypertension, atrial fibrillation, insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular mortality, and treatment with CPAP or a mandibular advancement device improves daytime sleepiness and metabolic markers.

Why It Matters

Treating sleep apnoea improves energy, blood pressure and appetite regulation, which makes weight management easier; NuLifeCare Singapore arranges formal assessment when screening suggests sleep-disordered breathing.
