Patient-Friendly Explanation
Focused ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to target and destroy fat cells beneath the skin without needles or incisions. The procedure is non-invasive — you remain awake throughout, and there is typically no downtime afterwards. Results develop gradually over several weeks as your body naturally clears away the treated fat cells.
Clinical Definition
Focused ultrasound fat reduction, also known as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) lipolysis, delivers thermal and mechanical energy to focal depths within the subcutaneous adipose layer, causing irreversible adipocyte damage through coagulative necrosis and cavitation. The apoptotic cell debris is subsequently cleared via the lymphatic system over 8–12 weeks. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, and thighs.
Why It Matters
For patients near their target weight who struggle with localised fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise, focused ultrasound offers a non-surgical option with minimal risk and recovery time. It does not replace weight loss but can complement a comprehensive programme. At NuLifeCare Singapore, we help patients understand which body contouring options — surgical and non-surgical — align with their goals.
