Patient-Friendly Explanation
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a long-term skin condition that causes painful, boil-like lumps under the skin, usually in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits and groin. These lumps can flare up, leak fluid, and leave scars. Being overweight increases the risk of HS and can make it harder to control.
Clinical Definition
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, inflammatory follicular occlusion disorder affecting intertriginous skin, characterised by recurrent nodules, abscesses, sinus tracts, and scarring. Obesity is a well-established risk factor: excess adiposity contributes mechanical friction, follicular occlusion, and a pro-inflammatory state (elevated TNF-alpha and IL-17) that amplifies disease activity. Weight loss of 5-15% has been shown to reduce HS severity and improve response to treatment.
Why It Matters
Because weight directly drives HS activity, weight management is part of treating the disease – not just an optional extra. NuLifeCare Singapore’s medical weight management programme can help you achieve the moderate, sustained loss that reduces flare frequency, alongside your dermatology care.
