Patient-Friendly Explanation

Nutrient partitioning is the way your body decides what to do with the food you eat, whether to use it to build muscle or store it as fat. Resistance training, adequate protein, and good blood sugar control help your body partition nutrients toward muscle. This is why two people on the same diet can end up with very different body shapes.

Clinical Definition

Nutrient partitioning refers to the metabolic distribution of ingested macronutrients between lean tissue protein synthesis and adipose tissue triglyceride storage. Insulin sensitivity, physical activity, and the hormonal environment (insulin, growth hormone, cortisol) are the principal determinants of partitioning efficiency. Impaired partitioning, as seen in insulin resistance, favours fat storage over muscle synthesis.

Why It Matters

Poor nutrient partitioning is one reason weight regain can happen even on a calorie-controlled diet. At NuLifeCare Singapore, we combine resistance exercise and metabolic optimisation with dietary planning to improve partitioning and protect muscle during weight loss.
