Patient-Friendly Explanation
Vertigo is a spinning or unsteady feeling that comes from the balance system in the inner ear. People carrying extra weight are more likely to develop certain balance problems, partly because of changes in pressure, inflammation and poorer sleep. Losing some weight often reduces how often the dizziness happens.
Clinical Definition
Obesity is an independent risk factor for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and other vestibular disorders. Proposed mechanisms include raised intracranial and intra-abdominal pressure, chronic low-grade inflammation, obstructive sleep apnoea and reduced physical conditioning. Vestibular rehabilitation combined with medical weight management improves symptom control and lowers falls risk.
Why It Matters
Dizziness is easy to dismiss as unrelated, yet it frequently points to untreated sleep apnoea or raised pressure that also affects metabolic health. Our NuLifeCare Singapore programme screens for these links as part of routine weight care.
