Weight Stigma
Negative attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination directed at individuals based on their body weight, recognised as a barrier to effective healthcare.
Patient-Friendly Explanation
Weight stigma is the unfair judgement or mistreatment people face because of their body weight. This can come from society, the workplace, or even healthcare settings. It is not your fault, and feeling ashamed can actually make weight management harder — not easier.
Clinical Definition
Weight stigma encompasses internalised, perceived, and enacted negative stereotypes about higher body weight. It is associated with increased cortisol levels, disordered eating behaviours, avoidance of medical care, and poorer health outcomes independent of BMI. The World Obesity Federation recognises it as a public health issue.
Why It Matters
At NuLifeCare, we provide a judgement-free environment where weight is treated as a medical condition, not a character flaw. Removing stigma is the first step to effective, compassionate care under Dr. Joseph Wang's supervision.
