Patient-Friendly Explanation

Zinc is a mineral involved in thyroid function, appetite regulation and blood sugar control. Low zinc is common in people with obesity, and levels improve with a balanced diet or supplementation.

Clinical Definition

Zinc is a cofactor for insulin synthesis and storage, leptin signalling and thyroid hormone metabolism. Deficiency is more prevalent in obesity and after gastric bypass or duodenal switch, where it is linked to impaired glucose handling and altered taste. Supplementation corrects deficiency but does not reliably produce weight loss in people who already have normal zinc levels.

Why It Matters

Zinc belongs on the routine post-bariatric micronutrient panel. Monitoring and replacement prevent deficiency-related fatigue, hair loss and poor wound healing rather than acting as a weight-loss strategy.
